Most of us were graded on our ability to ‘play well with others’ in kindergarten or grade school, but Dave’s leadership experience on campuses, in organizations and in the business world lets him know that it’s a life-long process to get it right.
“Anytime you have people interacting, you’re going to have conflict of some sort,” says Dave. “It’s just the nature of relationships, personalities and human beings. The goal is to learn to minimize those conflicts and keep your clubs and organizations from becoming dysfunctional.”
In Dave’s opinion, dealing with conflict is probably the most important skill a leader can have. “When the members of any organization are working together in harmony, keeping conflict to a minimum, always striving for win-win and keeping their eyes on the prize, it holds everything together and miracles can happen!”
Dave has trained and mentored thousands of college students and student leaders as both a leadership expert and the most honored District Administrator in the history of Circle K International (the student arm of Kiwanis International). There isn’t a source of conflict or type of problem that Dave hasn’t seen.
“They started teaching us this stuff in kindergarten for a reason,” says Dave. “It’s that important. The best laid plans of mice and men have met with disaster because of interpersonal and inter-organizational conflict – and it can all be so easily avoided.”
